Prayer of the People  — 15 December 2019

Heavenly Father,

From the beginning it has been your intention for us to enjoy your communion — the communion of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Thank you for this grace!

You have fulfilled your Word to us. Every “yes” has become a “yes” through Jesus Christ your Son. You know what is in us — yet you have come to us. You have fulfilled your Word to us.

You have sought us.
You have raised our curiosity.
You have enthralled our minds.
You have awakened our souls.
You have made us alive in you.
You have saved us.
You have made us glad.

Only you can satisfy our souls and lead us in the everlasting Way. May we delight in your Word and see your Word revealed in us as your Church. May we become more like Jesus.

Forgive us Lord for our word is not always true.
Yet, it does reveal our hearts — that our affections are not set on you.
Forgive us and reset the desires of our hearts according to Jesus, The Truth. Thank you for this grace!

Lord we lift up to you fellows students pressing in to complete the term and its exams. Help them study with you and to delight in your wisdom.

We lift up S Chan and his family to you as they are grieving the death of his grandfather. Comfort them and extend your care to them during this season.

We lift up to you our brothers and sisters at uVillage Church and ask you to cause them to flourish as your Church. Provide for their needs and fill them with Your Spirit to bring your healing to the nations.

We lift up Langara College and the neighbourhood there. Raise up your servants who will speak of Jesus boldly. May you raise a holy curiosity in the lives of students — may they seek you with all their hearts.

We lift up the students of Hong Kong, India, Iran, and Iraq to you. Oh Father, how you love them. Reveal yourself to them that may lay down despair for the joy of your Son’s Kingdom.

Today with your Church all around this globe we pray as Jesus teaches us:

(Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer.)

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one;
for yours is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever.
Amen.

Prayer of the People, 1 December 2019

Heavenly Father,

We cry out to you,
“Come.” Come and be with us Immanuel   – today,
In this Christmas season,
In this exam season.
Be with us in our struggles and in our joys.

We are waiting for You. Reveal to us the glory of being with you in your  communion — the communion of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We yearn for Your counsel, Your strength, Your guidance, Your peace , Your justice and righteousness.

And yet we are busy, sometimes too busy to stop and pay attention to Your counsel and to receive Your strength, Your guidance, Your peace, Your justice and righteousness.

Right now we quietly sit before You to reaffirm our longing for You and our willingness to walk with You.  (pause)

We pray over others who are not paying attention to Your kingdom or are unaware of Your goodness, and greatness, light for life;  Reveal to these dear ones in darkness — Your counsel, Your strength, Your guidance, Your peace, Your justice and righteousness.

We ask for hope and justice for the patients impacted by the Zimbabwean doctor’s strike, for the doctors and nurses. Grant them your wisdom and generosity.

In many places Peace seems far away and pain seems more powerful. We look for You, the Prince of Peace to show yourself to those impacted by shootings in Mexico, by political changes in Namibia, and by struggles in Iraq and Iran. We need Your guidance to steward the earth so people experience your love and care. Come Lord Jesus, Come.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen

Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer —

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one;
for yours is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever.
Amen.

Prayer of the People, 24 November 2019

Heavenly Father,

You are the God who saves. You have reached across the barriers of our ignorance and have made yourself known to us. Thank you for this grace. You have rescued us from darkness and have delivered us into the glorious light of the Kingdom of your Son. Now we reside with you in the  communion of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

We Praise you. You are the Living God. Where else could we go for life and the words of life?  Open our ears that we may hear your voice. Cause life to spring up in us. We long to know so much — we long to know you.

May your Spirit generate in us a greater curiosity about you. May we be drawn to see Jesus. Grant us the grace to grasp the immensity of His love for us.

We confess Lord — we are not like you. Sin keeps talking hold of us, the old nature resists your Spirit in us. We repent of:

our reluctance to be known.
our quickness to judge.
our desperate need for the world’s approval.
our greed, which is idolatry.
our silence which steals your glory.
our unforgiving hearts and
our sluggish love.

Create in us a clean heart Oh God. Restore to us the joy of your salvation. Renew our minds — even transform our minds — so that we may have power to live the way of the Gospel in our daily lives.

Lord while we have been looking inward we know many people bear the weight of great conflict from powers outside of them. Oh, that you would grant wisdom from heaven to the students in Hong Kong and to the people of Iran and Bolivia. Here in British Columbia we ask you to be present and to bring clarity of heart and mind to the negotiation tables for beneficial agreements to the people who serve our Province daily.

We are looking to you  — so we pray as Jesus teaches us —

(Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer.)

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one;
for yours is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever.
Amen.

Prayer of the People, 17 November 2019

Heavenly Father,

We gather with other people to tune our hearts and minds to Your presence, Your will, Your ways.  We ask that Your Spirit help us put aside all that vies for our attention and our loyalties. Help us fix our hearts and minds on You and the joy of your communion — the communion of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Lord, we bring You our

  • pain
  • anger
  • fears
  • disappointments
  • worries.

You see the cracks in our hope, the lagging of our spirits, and the many ways we try to entertain ourselves out of despair.

Lord, we must rely on You; Your lovingkindness shows us a better way.  May the Spirit of Jesus make us gentle, humble, patient. Help us to encourage one another as we seek to

  • serve one another in love
  • pursue justice in your name.
  • walk with You and declare your goodness.

We lift up the students in Hong Kong and ask you for peace. Give them a vision of You, and an invitation into your hope and your life. Make your name and your Kingdom known among them.

Fill us all with the full measure of Your presence, love, goodness.  We want to live in Your presence when we study, when we eat and drink, when we work, when we are in conflict.   Show us how to engage in the life fully in Your ways.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Prayer of the People, 3 November 2019

Heavenly Father,

Like the deer in a dry land, panting for streams of living water, we are thirsting for you. You have invited us to come and drink. And so, we have come to meet with you — in your communion — the communion of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Forgive us Lord, for we have confused our thirst for you with a thirst for power, for recognition, for ease, and for entertainment. Even now Lord, reset our souls to you. Awaken us to the majesty of your sovereign love and wisdom.

We have feared the mocker’s question — Where is your God? And so we kept silent; we retreated into our own doubt, and we made skepticism our fortress. We imagined a justice that did not include you. Oh Lord, break these walls down with the glorious image of Jesus pouring Himself out as a servant, taking up the towel and serving, taking up the cross and suffering that we might know You in your fullness.

Oh Spirit of God, blow through these walls that the fragrance of your life would be a delight to many. Cause hope to arise in us and praise to flow from our hearts in the day and the night. You are our comforter and healer. You restore us to the image of Christ Jesus our Lord. Stir us out of our passivity and activate attention to your love for us and attentive love for our neighbours at home, across the campus, and in the classroom.

Oh Lord, those living in the shadow of domination and desolation are crying out — Hear their cry Lord. Their cries are coming to you from Chile, from Venezuela, from Haiti, from Hong Kong, and from Iraq and even from here in Canada. Oh Lord direct your love to them, may your song be within them even in the night — a prayer to the God of their lives. Establish people of Jesus as vibrant communities whose praises arise as a beacon of hope in every dark corner or our globe.

Oh Lord in the name of Jesus we are pleading — may your Kingdom come!

(Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one;
for yours is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever.
Amen.
